RELIGIOUS DISCERNMENT - Self-Test

The following is based on a Discernment self-test from the Diocese of St. Petersburg. Honestly choosing a response for each item can serve as a guide along your path of vocational discernment.

   Let the love of Christ come before all else.

   1.    I am in love with Jesus. I have a close relationship with him. I want to let his teachings guide my life.

   2.    I am a believing, practicing Catholic. I believe what the Church teaches. I attend Mass every Sunday.

Serve with love.

  1. I live &/or desire a life of service. I am active in my Church community & in serving others.

Whatever good you do, PRAY.

  1. I live &/or desire a life of prayer. I have regular times for prayer during the day. I sometimes attend daily Mass, make visits to the Blessed Sacrament, go to Confession.
  2. I have a desire to be a Sister. I am sometimes attracted to the life of a Sister, even though I know it calls for self-sacrifice & I wonder if I could do it.

Listen!

  1. Others have told me I'd make a good Sister. Events have pointed me toward it. People in my life (e.g. Priests, Sisters, family members & friends) have suggested I think about it. Things happen that make me think I should try it out.
  2. 7. I am living a life of virtue. I know what is right & try to always follow my conscience. People who know me would say I am a good Christian.

Do what is best for others.

  1. I am a good person. I am relatively a generous & unselfish person. I am generally kind & gentle with others.

Community

  1. I am a "people person" I have good "people skills" and make friends easily & enjoy being with others.
  2. I am looking for a Community- group of like-minded women with whom I can pray, work, & celebrate on the faith journey; who, in mutual relationships can help me grow to be my best self in Christ.
  3. I have a love of learning. I did fairly well in school. I might like to go on for a higher degree but surely want life-long learning.
  4. I have a good sense of humor. I can be light-hearted-to laugh at myself or situations. Others see me as a happy person.
  5. I am physically, emotionally & psychologically stable. I care about something more than myself. I can care about others.
  6. I have a compassionate heart. I feel love & compassion for others. I want what is best for everyone & I will do what I can so others will know dignity & peace.
  7. I am a lady. I have good manners, proper speech & neat appearance.
  8. I have self control. I am courteous, punctual, composed. I can control my anger. I have personal discipline. I fulfill personal responsibilities.
  9. I have stability in my lifestyle. I do not frequently change jobs, schools, relationships. I feel comfortable with myself & am successful in my endeavors.
  10. I have a healthy psycho-sexual orientation. I have a normal attraction to the opposite sex. I can control this attraction. I have no sexual addictions.
  11. I can accept failure. I don't quit when things are hard. My self- esteem remains healthy even when projects do not succeed.
  12. I have good zeal. I love Christ and my faith; I am willing to spend myself to bring Christ to others in word & deed.
  13. I have a Balance/rhythm of prayer & work.
  14. I have good physical health. I have regular & sufficient diet, exercise & sleep.
  15. I practice Simplicity. I don't have or need to have the latest label or thing. I take care of what I have & I share.
  16. I love God's Word. I read the Bible & pray with the Scriptures ( I'd like to learn the Benedictine prayer, Lectio Divina)
  17. I give of my time & self to others. I volunteer-formally or as the need is known.
  18. I practice Hospitality. I welcome others into my life. I respect all.
  19. I care about the earth-ecology; people-sick, old, young, poor...  Peace-in the world, families. I do what I can to make the world a better place.
  20. I am seeking a life of Prayer & Community. Most important to me in life is union with God & others who love Him like I do & want to give themselves wholly to God's service.
  21. I am open to the will of God in my life. I believe God has a plan for my life & I desire to know/follow His plan. I will change my plans if God is calling me to religious life.
  22. I have taken initiative to learn/discern God's will. I have talked to a spiritual director, priest or Sister. I have sought information, made inquiries, visited &/or made vocation/discernment retreats.
